Sophia Mary Lee

Sophia Mary Lee, age 86, of Barnegat NJ, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born and raised in Staten Island, NY, Sophia brought joy, dedication and love to everyone fortunate enough to know her.

For 30 years, Sophia worked as a legal secretary at Marsh & McLennon in Manhattan, where her professionalism and commitment left a lasting impression. Her true calling, however, was her role as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Sophia cherished her family above all else, dedicating her life to creating a warm and loving home and spending time with her beloved husband.

Sophia had a passion for life that shone through in her many interests. She adored watching old movies and had a large collection. She also adored attending Broadway plays, sharing her love of theater with her family. Shopping trips with her daughter and granddaughter were among her favorite pastimes, and she found immense joy in caring for the many pets she welcomed into her life over the years. Her boundless love for animals was a reflection of her nurturing and compassionate spirit.

Sophia is survived by her devoted husband, Gary Lee, her beloved daughter Candace Crapanzano (Lee), her son-in-law Anthony Crapanzano, her cherished granddaughter Sophia Monteforte, and her step-grandson Angelo Crapanzano, all of Barnegat, NJ. She is also survived by her sister, Terry Paone Kluwe. Sophia was predeceased by her parents, Vito and Mary Paone (Russo), and her brother Cosmo Paone.

Sophia will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched. Her warmth, kindness, and unwavering love will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.

A celebration of Sophia’s life will be held on Monday, January 27th from 2pm-6pm at Layton Funeral Home, 250 W. Lacey Road, Forked River, NJ 08731.  A mass will follow on Tuesday, January 28th at 9:30 am at St. Pius X in Lacey Township. Her final resting place will be at Saint Mary's Parish Cemetery in Manahawkin, NJ.

Sophia’s family takes comfort in knowing she is at peace and will forever be their guiding light.
