Ruth Ellen Dunscombe was born on August 6, 1950. She was the daughter of the late
William E. and Jeanette C. Dunscombe and the sister of William E. Dunscombe (Veronica) of
New Providence, NJ
Ruth lived in Livingston, NJ and graduated from Livingston High School in 1969. While in
high school she won a Betty Crocker Award for her apple crisp which was seasonal favorite that
was enjoyed by many that knew her.
Ruth adopted her first kitten, Spice, at a very young age. She adopted the kitten to help heal a
broken arm that she got while Trick or Treating on a rainy Halloween. Spice lived with the
Family dog, Sugar.
Ruth attended Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY where she was an English major.
In the early 1970’s, Ruth moved to Forked River with her Mother and quickly embraced
Forked River as her new home. While living in Forked River she worked as a substitute teacher,
taught Catechism and subsequently worked for over twenty years helping people at the Ocean
County Board of Social Service. After “retiring”, Ruth worked at St. Pius Church. Wherever
she worked, she made friends quickly and always had a kind word for all.
Ruth was an active member and officer of the Lacey Historical Society and the Lacey
Township Garden Club.
Ruth was always an animal lover and would constantly do kindnesses for animals like
stopping in the middle of Route 9 or Lacey Road to “rescues” a box turtle that she would help to
the other side of the road. Ruth always had a cat “family” that she cared for with constant love.
All that knew her, acknowledged that she had a ready smile, a kind word, and embraced all
people with love and without reservation. Her patience and generosity were unequal. After
speaking with Ruth, one would usually leave the encounter feeling better about oneself.
Someone once said of her, “that she taught us by her example, how to be better Christians.”
She will be sadly missed and remembered with love.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ruth’s name to Popcorn Park Zoo in Forked River or any
animal shelter or rescues would be appreciated
