Robert James Gundersen Jr., born August 7, 1948, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at Deborah Heart and Lung Hospital on March 21, 2026.
Robert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his beloved wife of three years, Geraldine Reason; his six children; his sons-in-law and daughters-in-law; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his loving sister, Eileen McRae, and her husband, Bruce McRae; their son, Rob McRae and his wife, Michele McRae, who was also his godson and their children, Morgan Wolan and her husband, Eric and Mary Cate McRae; and his niece, Susan Eckert, and her husband, Kevin Eckert and children Mary Eckert and Robert Eckert; along with many cherished great-nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his beloved greyhound, Lacey.
Robert proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1972, where he worked on aircraft, helping keep the planes mission-ready in service to his country. He later continued his service to fellow veterans as Commander at Post 714 and remained very involved with the VA and the veteran community. Though he was legally blind, he never allowed that to slow him down. He continued to go out, encourage, support, and motivate other veterans and remained deeply dedicated to serving his community.
Robert was a devoted Catholic who enjoyed attending Sunday church with his beloved wife, his sister, and his brother-in-law. He loved the outdoors and was a man who truly enjoyed life, family, and time spent together. Robert and his wife, Geraldine, were high school sweethearts and prom dates who found their way back to each other later in life, building a beautiful life together filled with love, faith, and family.
He will be dearly missed and forever loved by all who knew him. Gone far too soon, his memory will live on in the hearts of his family, his fellow veterans, and all who had the honor of knowing him.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.
