Robert Dugan Obituary

Robert Patrick Dugan, 72, of Waretown, NJ, formerly of Paramus, NJ, died at home on Tuesday May 10th.  He was the son of the late Henrietta (Lackovic) and Cornelius Dugan; and predeceased by his wife Carol (McAdam); brother Michael and sister Julie Plumadore.  He is survived by his loving companion, Grace Anne LaBarre,  his brother-in-law, Stephen and nephew Matthew Plumadore as well as many loving cousins and dedicated and loyal friends.

Bob spent his early years in Saddle Brook graduating from the high school in 1967.  He enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1969, serving in Vietnam 1969-1970 and honorably discharged as a Lance Corporal.  He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 170, Rochelle Park and served as Commander in the VFW Post 3484 in Saddle Brook.   He was a proud Marine Veteran and his strong patriotism continued throughout his life.

Sgt. Robert Dugan was a dedicated police officer for the Borough of Paramus. He was appointed in 1986 and promoted to Sergeant in 2001, retiring in 2006. He was a founding member of the Ceremonial Honor Guard serving for 10 years and also an associated member of Police Pipes and Drums of Bergen County. Bob was so proud to “Serve and Protect” the citizens of Paramus.  It was not a job – it was his honor to serve.

Bob Dugan was also a man of many passions.

He was passionate about being Irish, celebrating the “High Holy Day” by baking a couple dozen Irish Soda Breads for his friends. And, his drink-of-choice, of course, was Irish Whiskey.   He loved everything and everyone Irish.

Bob’s zeal for fishing started when he was a youngster.  His passion for this sport took him on fishing trips to Ontario, Massachusetts and Montauk.  Ultimately, he purchased a home on-the-water off Barnegat Bay. He was an avid fisherman all his life.

His passion for the beauty of life around him is reflected in his watercolor paintings.   He started this hobby when he retired - gifting his paintings to friends and making his home a gallery of his art.  His friends and family treasure his original Christmas cards.

After retiring, Bob was a volunteer at Eva’s Kitchen in Paterson. Upon the death of his wife, he moved permanently to his summer home in Waretown; joining the local Lacey Elks and Moose, the Waretown Historical Society and Pine Shores Art Association.

He was good-hearted and fun.  He donated generously to charities; actively participated in local organizations; was happy to help anyone in need and was always grateful for every kindness he had ever received.     Bob was a loving Irish Gentleman.
