John K. Carr III, affectionately known as “Butch,” passed away on May 16, 2025, in Rock Hill, South Carolina, at the age of 61, following a courageous four-year battle with lung cancer. Born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, on September 30, 1963, Butch lived a life filled with passion, hard work, and deep devotion to those he loved.
A gifted carpenter and general contractor, everybody’s go-to guy to build just about anything, and always with care and pride. But his true legacy wasn’t what he built with his hands, but what he built with his heart: a life centered around family, loyalty, and love.
Butch was a born outdoorsman. He found peace in the woods and joy on the water - hunting, fishing, crabbing, clamming and boating. He was always in motion, always creating, and always thinking of ways to bring people together. He loved entertaining guests - especially if it meant building a life-sized foosball court for the occasion.
To those who knew him, Butch was more than just dependable - he was a rock. Loyal, brave, gentle, and generous, he never hesitated to lend a hand or show up when it mattered. He worked hard not for recognition, but for the quiet satisfaction of making life better for the people around him. He would help anyone, anytime, without expecting anything in return.
Above all else, Butch was a devoted husband and family man. He was endlessly proud of his children and deeply involved in their lives - whether coaching sports and cheering from the stands, helping with science projects, or dominating the pinewood derby circuit (he never lost, and made sure you knew it). His greatest joy was seeing his family happy, and he dedicated every ounce of himself to making that happen.
Butch is survived by his beloved wife of 31 years, Regina Carr; his children: Ashley Ward (Thomas), Jessica Neetz (Jordan), Kyle Teeter (Sydney), Kevin Teeter, and John “Bug” Carr (Sasha); and his grandchildren: Mariah, Hailey, Julianna,Tommy, Lucas, and Leo. He is also survived by his siblings: Deborah Fabbrini (Ken), Kenneth Carr, Robert Carr, and Donald Carr (Charity); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who loved him like family.
He is predeceased by his mother, Helen Bodnar Kozak; his father, John K. Carr Jr.; and his siblings, Glenn Carr and Dawn Carr.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Layton’s Home for Funerals, 250 Lacey Road in Forked River, New Jersey
Butch lived every day with purpose - and that purpose was family. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and resilience. He will be missed beyond words, remembered in every project completed with care, every story told with heart, and every moment spent in the great outdoors. He leaves behind a legacy that is nothing short of extraordinary.
