James (Jim) Morgan, a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and neighbor, passed away peacefully in Forked River, New Jersey, on January 14, 2026, at the age of 89.
Born in Jersey City on March 9, 1936, to James and Marie (née Kalicinski) Morgan, Jim spent his youth in Jersey City before moving to Saddle Brook, where he graduated from Lodi High School in 1954. From a young age, Jim held a singular fascination with aviation. He pursued this dream while studying electrical engineering at Fairleigh Dickinson University and serving as a reservist in the U.S. Navy. In 1958, he entered the Navy as a cadet, receiving his commission and wings at NAS Pensacola in 1960.
After his service as a Naval Aviator, Jim began a distinguished 30-year career with American Airlines in 1965. Rising quickly from flight engineer to Captain, he commanded everything from the BAC 1-11 and Boeing 707 to advanced aircraft from McDonnell Douglas, Airbus, and Fokker. His career took him across Europe, the Americas, and Australia until his retirement in 1995.
In 1965, Jim married Mary McGovern. They raised their three children in Ringwood, New Jersey, before retiring to Forked River in 1987. A man of boundless energy, Jim was an avid marathon runner, watercolor painter, and opera lover. Even in retirement, his feet rarely touched the ground; he spent hours building radio-controlled aircraft and mastering flight simulators. He was a familiar, friendly face in his neighborhood, known for his long walks and bike rides.
Jim was predeceased by his beloved wife of 39 years, Mary; his son, Terence; and his sister, Joan. He is survived by his son, James (Patricia); his daughter, Susan; his sister, Jean; and his brother, Robert. He leaves behind a legacy of six grandchildren—William, Kevin, Michael, Terrence, Fiona, and Norah—and his cherished new great-grandson, Declan.
