James J. Schmidling Jr., 84, of Forked River, NJ, died March 24, 2026. Jim grew up in Boonton and spent much of his time fixing up cars, and listening to Yankee games. He graduated from Bayley Ellard High School in 1960 and then moved to Towaco where he volunteered with the Montville First Aid Squad.
In 1968, Jim moved down the shore and began his 33-year career with PepsiCo. Jim was devoted to his family, friends, and his garden, where he could frequently be found. He enjoyed taking bus trips to AC with his wife Mimi and their friends, attending local sports events, and going to the boardwalk for an ice cream cone and fireworks.
After his retirement, Jim dedicated his newfound time to his community. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Lacey Elks, Republican Club, Historical Society, Old Guard, Sunrise Beach Club, where his favorite role was Pizza Party Captain, and the Italian Club despite having zero Italian heritage.
Jim is survived by his wife Mimi, daughter Donna Perini and her husband Mike, stepson Anthony Larangeira and his wife Jacqueline, and stepdaughter Laurie Larangeira (Lee Brown). He also leaves behind grandchildren Brielle, Anthony, Thomas, Justin and Kyle, and greatgrandchildren Anthony and Joseph.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 9 am on Saturday June 6 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Lacey Road in Forked River, followed by a repast.
