Obituary

On the morning of March 6, 2021, George Ignatius DePalma passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family.

George Ignatius was born to Adelaide and Nicholas DePalma on May 29th, 1952 in Hoboken, New Jersey. Much of George’s life was spent in and shaped by the ‘Mile Square City.’ The stories of his older sister Nikki Ann, younger sister Ginny and extended family at 116 Jefferson Street are legendary. At an early age he was nicknamed “Gig” which it stuck wit him throughout his life. His family was very involved in the Catholic Church, which solidified his faith at an early age. Gig enjoyed summers at his family’s house in Keansburg, NJ where his love for the beach began. He was involved with sports from a young age and played for Hoboken baseball, basketball and football teams.

George was a proud alumnus of Hoboken High School and Trenton State College.

Gig wed his beautiful wife, Patricia (nee Mexisell) in October of 1975. Gig and Pat moved to Howell, New Jersey where they raised their family until moving to Forked River in 2019. George began working for Garden State Office Systems & Equipment as a salesman. After years of hard work, promotions and serving as President of GSOS, he bought the business. Gig served on the boards of several industry associations, including ISDA President.

George was a long time New York Yankee, New Jersey Devil and Arizona Cardinal fan. He was a history buff, particularly regarding the American Revolution, an avid reader and lover of music. Gig shared his passions for sports, particularly hockey, with each of his three sons. He coached for and served as the President of Brick Hockey Club in Brick, New Jersey. As the year of playing hockey came to an end, Gig enjoyed playing golf with his “compadre(s)” and sons.

Gig believed in supporting his community and generously donated to local police, fire departments, schools and sports programs. He was a man of deep spiritual faith who committed and contributed to his parishes over the years.

George is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years Patricia, his three sons, Dustin, David, Brett, daughter Karissa and their spouses, Adrianna, Krista and Richard. George has 5 beautiful granddaughters, Hannah, Maddie, Delaney, Colette and Collyns as well as six grand”dogs” Aloe, Axel, Rose, Murphy, Bella and Sunday.
