Catherine “Kay” Inez Cunningham (nee Treanor), 88, of Lanoka Harbor, NJ passed away peacefully at home on April 11, 2020.
Born in Lyndhurst on November 28, 1931, Kay grew up in Wood-Ridge, NJ. After graduating from Holy Trinity High School in Hackensack, NJ in 1949 she worked in the research department of US Rubber. She married Charles Cunningham in 1955, and they lived in Fairlawn and Lake Hiawatha, NJ prior to moving to Lanoka Harbor in 1971. While raising a family, Kay worked as a substitute teacher in Lake Hiawatha, and then in the library and the guidance department at Central Regional High School after moving to Lanoka Harbor. After being widowed in 1978, Kay attended the Ocean County Vocational Technical Nursing program and became an LPN. She worked at the New Lisbon Developmental Center until her retirement in 1993.
Predeceased by her husband Charlie in 1978, she is survived by her 2 sisters Eileen Novak (Vinnie) and Ann Phipps as well as her sons Brian (Karen) of Vero Beach, Florida and Glenn (Laura) of Barnegat, NJ and daughter Carol Rapaport (Martin) of Ridgewood, NJ; 10 grandchildren, Lyndsay, Jade, Kelsey, Kyle, Molly, Erik, Owen, Bethany, Emmett, Maggie; and 3 great-grandchildren, Guy, Mia and Sam and many nieces and nephews. She was a parishioner at St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church in Forked River, NJ.
Kay enjoyed her morning crossword puzzles, walks at Berkeley Island, afternoons spent in the backyard with her birds and blooms, and an evening game of Jeopardy. She was an avid NY Yankees fan who rarely missed a televised game!
A service will be held in the future when her friends and family can gather to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the National Audubon Society.
