Edward Joseph Szczech, 95, passed away on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at HMH – Southern Ocean County Medical Center in Stafford Township, NJ. He was born on October 12, 1924 in Newark, New Jersey and raised there. He served as an Army Corpsman in the Pacific during World War II and received the Purple Heart when he was seriously wounded while protecting his patient in the field. As a 100% disabled veteran, he found it difficult to find employment after the war. He was persistent and worked for several bakeries and breweries before going to work for the United States Postal Service in Perth Amboy. He also owned his own landscaping business in the Woodbridge area. He married the beautiful “girl next door”, June M. Duran, on August 27, 1947. They lived in Woodbridge before moving to Waretown almost 50 years ago. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the American Postal Workers Union and the Waretown Democratic Club. Ed was a very active man. He loved to garden, teach others about specific plants and go to Atlantic City, especially for those buffets and the slot machines. He also liked to watch football, eat good food and spend quality time with his family. His faith was paramount to him and gave him great solace at the end of his life.
He was predeceased by his parents, Michelina (Szymanski) and Joseph Szczech, as well as his siblings, Victor, Stanley, Jean Kalasian and Julie Savi. Edward is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, June M. Szczech and his devoted sons, Dwayne of Broadheadsville, Pa.; Richard of Waretown, NJ; and, Kevin of Lanoka Harbor, NJ, as well as his sisters Sophie of Titusville, Florida, Gertrude “Trudy” Hancock of Titusville, Florida and his brother Daniel of Old Bridge, NJ. Edward also left behind 6 grandchildren, Elizabeth Kays of Virginia Beach, VA; Kelly DiFrancia; Grace McCaffrey of Little Egg Harbor, NJ; Richard Jr. of LBI, NJ; Jennifer Miller of Canton, GA and Dana Sherman of Broadheadsville, PA. There are also 13 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and many special friends.
The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that donations are made to Debra of America online at www.debra.org/give or by mail at 75 Broad Street, Suite 300, NY, NY 10004.
